How Denmark Inspires

What's the Meaning of the Danish Word Hygge? (Think: Warm + Cozy)

Some languages have words for which there is no single, or direct, translation. In Danish, hygge (pronounced “HUE-gah”) is one such word.

Though there are many ways to describe hygge, we see it simply as the Danish ritual of enjoying life. Friends. Family. Graciousness. Good feelings. A warm glow. Certainly, hygge is intrinsic to the Danish lifestyle, but this feeling of well-being, so deeply satisfying and cozy, is something we all experience, each in our own way.

Celebrating Happiness+Hygge is important to us. So important, in fact, that we’ve devoted a section of our site to encouraging all things “hygge-related,” on a global scale. Our goal: more hospitality, more warmth, more respect for each other and the environments we share. The hygge tradition includes the sharing of our stories—stories about ideas and history, culture and the things we create.

What are the things that say “hygge” to you? We hope you share them on Instagram, Pinterest, Facebook or Twitter using #Skagen

For a look at what other “hygge lovers” have shared, see our HAPPINESS+HYGGE Pinterest board or the #SKAGEN section of our site, or expand the reach of our “hygge” moment by sharing it on Facebook.
