Materials

Steel

Stainless steel is a durable metal that has a higher resistance to tarnish and corrosion, and will not oxidize or turn black. Stainless Steel is also hypo-allergenic, protecting the skin from any irritation. It doesn’t discolor some skin types like other more traditionally used alloys. Stainless steel is non-magnetic, with an appearance of Platinum but 1,000 times stronger than platinum at a fraction of the cost. Stainless steel is easily cleaned by a dry soft cloth. Stainless steel is an alloy compound that is ‘nickel safe’, not nickel free. Stainless steel is a stable metal that passes ROHS and EU standards.

Ion Plating

In line with our mission to designing unique, yet attainable products, we incorporate distinctive color offerings into our jewllery, and we do so with an extremely reliable and established process called ion plating (referred to as IP in our marketing materials). Ion plating is one of the most advanced surface finishing processes for jewellery. In older, more traditional methods the coating on the surface of the jewellery can be rubbed off easily. Ion plating is made by the formation of chemical gases which leads to more durability, more wear resistance, and can also offer better color. Using different gas will form different colors:

IPG (gold color) = TiN (Titanium nitride) IP violet/brown = TiAlN (Titanium aluminum nitride)
IP rose gold = TiN+Cu (Titanium nitride + Copper) IP grey (charcoal) = TiC (Titanium carbonate)

Skagen Designs offers the most advanced means for color-plated jewellery, allowing us to offer our customers the highest level of value when purchasing a Skagen Denmark Jewellery piece. Note that ion plating does not contain any nickel during the production process.

Enamel

Enamel is a material made by fusing powdered glass to a substrate by firing. The powder melts, flows and then hardens to a smooth, durable vitreous coating on metal, and also on glass or ceramics.

Epoxy

Epoxy is a copolymer that is formed from two different chemicals, referred to as “resin” and the “hardener”. Most common epoxy resins are produced from a reaction between epichlorohydin and bisphenol-A. The hardner consists of polyamine monomers. When these compounds are mixed together they form a covalent bond whith a glossy smooth appearance.

Freshwater Cultured Pearls

Pearls are organic gems, created when an oyster covers a foreign object with beautiful layers of nacre. The quality of pearls is judged by their orient, which is the soft iridescence caused by the refraction of light by the layers of nacre, and luster, the reflectivity and shine of the surface which gives pearls their beautiful sheen and luster.

SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS

Skagen Denmark uses only the highest quality of crystals in our Jewellery line. By partnering with Swarovski, Skagen Denmark is elevating the brand with authenticity and integrity by using SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS . Our contract reference number is 115 1156.

SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS can be seated on the jewellery by a very strong glue, or setting (prong or seat). The size of the stone varies from .80 –2.90mm.

Mother-of-Pearl

Mother of Pearl is an iridescent, milky interior shell of a mollusk. While most have a milky white luster, mother-of-pearl is also available in pink, blue, brown and black.
