How Denmark Inspires

Six Quotes from Hans Christian Andersen that Continue to Spark the Imagination

Perhaps no Dane is as timeless as Hans Christian Andersen, best remembered for his eventyr, or fairy tales. Translated into more than 125 languages, stories like “The Princess and the Pea,” “The Little Mermaid” and “The Emperor's New Clothes” continue to inspire and teach children and their parents around the world.

Most of Andersen’s fans and readers don’t realize that the author visited Skagen in 1859; the town and its sand-buried church left such an impression that he turned his experience into a tale: “A Story from the Dunes.”
